"The Greeks and Romans knew about diabetes. Fortunately, the way they tested for the condition--by tasting the urine--has gone by the wayside." Diabetes for Dummies has the friendly, quirky style you expect from all the For Dummies books, but this is no skim-the-surface Diabetes 101. Rubin has packed this book with useful information, peppered with warm advice for enjoying your life while living with diabetes. One of his points is that although you'd rather not have this disease, you're lucky to have it now instead of a few decades ago, because today you can manage diabetes and live a productive, quality-filled life. The book is divided into sections on "Dealing with the Onset of Diabetes," "How Diabetes Affects Your Body," "Managing Diabetes: The 'Thriving with Diabetes' Lifestyle Plan," and "Special Considerations for Living with Diabetes." Each chapter is packed with facts and strategies on topics such as monitoring, battling complications, medications, diet, and exercise. If you skim, it's an introduction to diabetes; if you read it carefully, it's a textbook. Web surfers will appreciate the "Dr. W.W. Web" appendix, where Rubin lists many useful diabetes Web sites. (If you'd rather click than type, you can visit Rubin's Web site, where he offers links to all the diabetes sites.) Also included is a mini-cookbook of multiethnic recipes from noted restaurants, mostly in San Francisco (with the restaurant address, in case you want to order instead of cook). --Joan Price --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. As one of the country’s leading endocrinologists, Alan Rubin could be expected to know a lot about diabetes. -- Rick Mendosa, Diabetes Journalist, www.mendosa.com/diabetes.htm At last, a diabetes book for everyone. Dr. Rubin is superb at translating the issues of diabetes into plain English. -- G. Robert Hampton, M.D., Retinal Specialist on the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Public Information Committee, Syracuse, NY Diabetes For Dummies is a wonderfully written book and will become the companion book for all diabetics and their families. -- Michael D. Goldfield, M.D. Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, University of California Medical Center, San Francisco, CA Filled with wit and wisdom, this book will teach you the Ten Commandments of Diabetes Care, which can help add life to your years...and years to your life. -- Dr. This lively and lucid guide will provide you the information you need to leap to the peaks of understanding diabetes. -- June Biermann & Barbara Toohey This lively and lucid tell-it-all guide will provide you with the information you need to leap from the depths of diabetes ignorance to the peaks of understanding. -- June Biermann and Barbara Toohey, Founders and Editors-in-Chief of diabetes.com --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

DeWayne McCulley is an ex-diabetic engineer who survived a near-death, coma experience with a blood glucose level of 1337 -- more than 1200 points above normal. Despite hyperglycemia, dehydration, two blood clots, high cholesterol, pneumonia and four insulin shots a day, DeWayne was able to use his 30 years of experience in Corporate America (engineering and biochemistry) to methodically and completely wean himself off the insulin, Coumadin and other drugs to lower his average glucose level to 92.5 and his hemoglobin A1C to 4.5% -- reversing his diabetes, losing over 52 pounds, and requiring no drugs of any kind in less than 6 months. He credits his recovery to God, his doctors and nurses, his mother, his daughter Cynthia, a set of unexplained accidents (blessings), and his engineering background. With a lot of encouragement from Cynthia, his mother and various people from work, the local churches, people in the wellness industry, and the two diabetic support groups he was facilitating, DeWayne decided to write a book that explains the real root causes of Type 2 diabetes and how to beat the disease (and its complications). His hope is that this book will inspire you the way he was inspired -- by people he would never have met if it weren't for his experience with diabetes. DeWayne currently works as diabetes educator, speaker and health advocate, providing workshops and training to companies, health organizations, churches, families, wellness groups, and other community groups about diabetes, nutrition, heart disease and stroke. More than 19 million Americans have type 2 diabetes and 13 million more are at risk of developing the disease. The good news is that it is both preventable and treatable. In the American Medical Association Guide to Living with Diabetes you'll learn everything you need to know to prevent type 2 diabetes, take control of it if you already have it, and reduce your risk of life-threatening complications. This book provides clear, easy-to-understand explanations of what type 2 diabetes is, what causes it, and how to determine if you are at risk. You'll find a detailed, easy-to-follow program for preventing diabetes by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and reaching and maintaining a healthy weight. The symptoms of high blood sugar, the hallmark of diabetes, can be subtle—the reason why the disorder can go undetected for many years. This comprehensive guide helps you understand the risk factors for type 2 diabetes and the importance of getting an early diagnosis and treatment. The book describes the tests used to diagnose diabetes and enables you to take charge of your treatment regimen by giving you the facts about such important topics as: Why you can be more susceptible to developing type 2 diabetes at different stages of life, such as at puberty, during pregnancy, and as you get older Personalized dietary guidelines Safe and effective exercise programs designed to reduce blood sugar levels The latest information on diabetes medications and blood sugar testing What research shows about complementary and alternative therapies Helpful tips for special situations such as traveling and illness The goal of managing your diabetes is to prevent or reduce the serious complications that can result from uncontrolled blood sugar. You'll learn how to recognize and minimize the effects of acute, life-threatening complications such as low blood sugar and diabetic ketoacidosis, as well as serious long-term complications, including heart and blood vessel disease, nerve damage, kidney disease, eye damage, and dental problems. Among the most alarming aspects of the growing type 2 diabetes epidemic is the increase in the disease among children and young adults. This invaluable guide details the risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes in young people, the most important of which are excess weight and lack of exercise. Parents will find the information they need to help their children avoid diabetes and, if they have it, get an early diagnosis and effective treatment. A complete chapter in the book is devoted to gestational diabetes, an increasingly common form of diabetes that can occur during pregnancy. By following the recommendations and guidelines in the American Medical Association Guide to Living with Diabetes, you can reduce or eliminate the symptoms, avoid or minimize the risk of serious complications, and become more physically fit, energetic, and alert. In fact, there's no reason you can't be healthier than you've ever been. For more than 150 years, the American Medical Association has been the leading group of medical experts in the United States and one of the most respected health-related organizations in the world.
